I often get asked the question ‘what is Coaching and how does it work?’ Coaching is a structured conversation that aims to help people reach their best potential by:
•Identifying priorities and setting personal goals to help them attain their highest aspirations, desires and dreams
•Sharing effective tools and solutions to achieve control and focus at work as well as a balanced, happy life
•Maximising their personal and professional potential and resourcefulness
I’d like to make the case that these aims are the same (or should be) for managers whose role it is to provide support to their teams as much as it is to provide direction. Effective coaches (and managers) use a variety of communication tools, cognitive models and knowledge to help develop the strengths of their people.
Coaching works best when the coach (or manager) is skilled at widening people’s perceptions to challenge their thinking and address limiting beliefs. The coaching conversation helps people identify the actions they need to take to achieve the results they desire. The tools a coach (and manager) uses include:
• Communication tools such as listening and questioning skills
• Non-verbal communication skills such as body language
• Coaching Frameworks to guide the conversation
• Feedback to build confidence and provide positive challenge
• Goal setting, to help people set personal goals and support them to take action
The question that emerges is ‘should all managers become qualified Coaches’?
The simple answer is no, though from a professional perspective I always recommend taking part in a training programme especially if you are going to use coaching within a professional capacity. That said learning coaching skills is a useful way to practice personal development.
We provide bespoke coaching programmes that help equip managers with effective coaching skills and are running a half-day (9.30 – 1.00) workshop for those interested in learning how to use coaching skills in the workplace.
